Freemasonry traces its roots back to the building of King Solomon's temple. The story can be found in 1st Kings 5 in the Holy Bible. The builders at the the temple were operative masons, we are speculative masons; this means that while we follow some of the same customs, we do not actually do the work of masons. While the origins of freemasonry can be found in the Bible, freemasonry is not a religion, but it does go hand in hand with religion. We do not promote or dictate any particular religion, all religions are welcome. It is, however, a requirement that all Freemasons believe in a Supreme Being. In the middle of every lodge you will find an altar with a Sacred Book of Laws.
There are many myths about Freemasonry that people accept as truth because they don't know any better. The first, and biggest, of these is that we are a secret society. We are not a secret society, but rather a society with secrets. Freemasons do not disguise the fact that we are Freemasons, nor do we hide when or where we meet. There are some secrets that Freemasons keep, but they are only so that Freemasons can recognize one another wherever they are in the world.
There are very few requirements when it comes to qualifying to become a Freemason, they are:
1. You must be male
2. You must be able to read and write
3. You must believe in a Supreme Being
